Coffee and Jesus

Coffee, and Jesus, and One More Chapter to Read:

Coffee, and Jesus, and one more chapter to read. Let’s talk about the sacredness of mornings. Not just any morning, the kind where you beat the sun out of bed, your Bible is already open, coffee is brewing (or has been miraculously delivered by a loving spouse or a programmable machine), and the world hasn’t started speaking to me.

These moments feel special because they are mine. Peaceful and quiet. Like a little taste of heaven before the busyness begins. But here’s the thing: these mornings don’t happen by accident. They occur when we make time for Jesus.

Morning Routines

We’re not talking about legalism here. You don’t get extra credit in heaven for setting your alarm at 5:30 a.m. But Scripture does emphasize the value of seeking God early.

“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark,

Jesus got up, left the house, and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.”

—Mark 1:35 (NIV)

Even Jesus needed quiet time with the Father. And while your version might involve a comfy robe and a cinnamon roll instead of wilderness solitude, the principle remains the same: intentional time with God transforms us.

It’s Not About Perfection

Some mornings, it may take a bulldozer to help get you out of bed because you couldn’t fall asleep the night before until really late, or perhaps the baby wakes up too early. In a rush and half-opened eyes, you spill your coffee or you bump your knee. You can’t find your journal. Or when you do sit down, and your mind decides to run a marathon of distractions, planning your day of what needs your attention instead of meditating on Scripture.

That’s okay. God is far more interested in your presence than your performance.

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
—James 4:8 (NKJV)

Oh, and Don’t Forget the Funny Moments

My husband is becoming a morning person, and no matter how hard I try, I am not. He wakes up and is 99% of the time in a good mood. It takes me a while to get into a groove, but he can put a smile on my face and say something to me that gets me to laugh.

Another example is when a friend was having her morning quiet time with worship music playing, and her toddler walked in mid-song with an open jar of grape jam in one hand and a big spoon in the other, her sticky fingers and face demanding some toast to go with it. Morning surprises happen, but Jesus is still present in all of it.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.”
—Proverbs 17:22 (NIV)

  2. Try to keep it simple.

—Psalm 90:14 (NIV)
